Equipment may not be\nfrequently cleaned or disinfected, and the warm, moist\nand pH neutral conditions provide an ideal place for\nbacterial species to thrive. Claims made by these\ncompanies were challenged since they test their\nproducts against lab strains of bacteria and not those\nisolated from the natural environment. Samples were\ngrown on selective and differential media. Bacteria\nwere identified to be Staphylococcus aureus and\nEnterobacteriaceae. The efficacy of three disinfectants,\nClean by Peroxy\u00AE (Spartan Chemical Company,\nMaumee, OH), Everwipe\u00AE Disinfectant Wipes (Legacy\nConverting, Cranbury, NJ) and Chemspa Swipe\u2122 (Spa\nPartners, East Hanover, NJ) used by two gym locations\nagainst each bacterial isolate was determined using the\ndisk-diffusion method. Kirby-Bauer tests were\nperformed to find the susceptibility of S. aureus strains\nto penicillin and enteric strains to carbapenem\nantibiotics in order to identify isolates as MRSA or\nCRE.
