Abstract:
Many potentially pathogenic bacteria exist in fitness facilities across the nation. Equipment may not be frequently cleaned or disinfected, and the warm, moist and pH neutral conditions provide an ideal place for bacterial species to thrive. Claims made by these companies were challenged since they test their products against lab strains of bacteria and not those isolated from the natural environment. Samples were grown on selective and differential media. Bacteria were identified to be Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacteriaceae. The efficacy of three disinfectants, Clean by Peroxy® (Spartan Chemical Company, Maumee, OH), Everwipe® Disinfectant Wipes (Legacy Converting, Cranbury, NJ) and Chemspa Swipe™ (Spa Partners, East Hanover, NJ) used by two gym locations against each bacterial isolate was determined using the disk-diffusion method. Kirby-Bauer tests were performed to find the susceptibility of S. aureus strains to penicillin and enteric strains to carbapenem antibiotics in order to identify isolates as MRSA or CRE. Results from this investigation will determine whether recommendations for more effective disinfectants should be made to the directors of the fitness facilities. ( English )
